Have you heard of the “Hostess City of the South?” Does a welcome call like that really exist? Indeed, it does. Characterized by its cobblestone streets, for starters, Savannah, Georgia exudes ancient charm and sprawling parks. Through blending its southern hospitality with Antebellum buildings, the city is very far from ordinary.

In fact, it is the oldest city in Georgia. Established in 1773 by General James Oglethorpe (and 120 passengers) who arrived on the ship Anne—they also colonized the area. Notably, the General named the state of Georgia in honor of the English King George II. At the same time, Savannah became America’s first planned city with 24 square blocks—22 which still stand today.

The Strength of Savannah’s Beauty

Over the years, this southern town endured some rough times via the American Civil War and fever outbreaks. Yet, just when all seemed lost, this southern hub was saved by its very beauty. As legend has it—when General Sherman presented Savannah as a gift to President Lincoln, he was so impressed by the city’s beauty, he changed his intent to destroy it.

And so, saved by its beauty, the prosperous “Savannah Renaissance” began. Of course, this vintage city then became the host to many notable historic spots. These include the Historic District, the Pirate’s House, and the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist—each worth a visit on its own. Notably, as Georgia’s fifth largest city, the city offers a rich menu of exciting cultural events and entertainment.
